My name is Shahid Wazed and I love my job.

As part of my job, I get to travel around the world and do a lot of public speaking at recruitment events, which has allowed me to meet all different kinds of recruiters and talent acquisition leaders.

My experience has taught me one important lesson, which is that when it comes to recruitment – mindset is more important than just strategy and tactics!

Our industry can be tough, and sometimes we find ourselves working in an environment that places so much emphasis on short-term strategy and tactics, that we lose sight of having the right, big picture mindset. As recruiters, we need to continuously push the envelope and be focused on long-term business goals and best practice recruiting. If we don’t, we run the risk of becoming complacent or just going along with everyone else’s status quo.

For example, when you see a clunky Applicant Tracking System in place for years and the person who’s in charge of Talent Acquisition in that organisation hasn’t upgraded it, doesn’t that say a lot about that person’s mindset?

In my experience, recruiters and talent acquisition managers usually fall into one of two camps that are pretty easily identifiable by the below symptoms.
First, there are those who follow the status quo:

  • They may have a clunky, dated Applicant Tracking System
  • Their recruitment platform doesn’t allow candidates to apply for jobs from mobile devices and isn’t integrated with social media
  • The level of experience in their team is lagging on web-based sourcing and recruiting

On the other hand, there are those recruiters who:

  • Continually challenge the status quo and reevaluate their ways of working
  • Use advanced recruitment software and implement new recruitment projects every year (it’s like showering every day, it’s done on a regular basis – let’s hope it is!)
  • Invest in continuous education to be able to see angles others just can’t and to stay on top of industry best practice

Now, why is continuous learning not more of a priority for most recruiting teams? Have you given much thought to the kind of events and courses your team could attend to make you more blue sky thinkers?
When recruiting teams don’t learn for years they’re bound to fall behind, and some of the consequences that I’ve seen are that recruiters are not utilising the right channels to reach top talent, and hire average talent (while taking a long time to do so).

Enrolling in a course or conference is an easy way to upskill yourself but before you do, ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Am I going to this to party or to actually learn? Yes, there’s a difference!
  2. What will be the top 3 – 5 takeaways from it that I’ll implement this year?
  3. Who are the top 3 people I want to network with and have a 1-on-1 conversation with?

Having a positive, proactive mindset is especially important when attending a course/conference so that you can get the maximum value out of it and be open to learning something new that will revitalise those day-to-day strategies and short-term tactics!

I’ll leave you with this quote from myself:

Work on your mindset first before worrying about strategies and/or tactics.

  1. That is true because mindset gets things done. It is your driving force to implement those strategies and tactics. For example, you want to quit your job, your strategy is to seek help from a recruitment firm in good hope that the recruiter will find you a good company to pursue a career in.
