Once in a while, you get the chance to do something a little bit out of the ordinary that ends up being extraordinary.

For myself and four other Adders, we had that moment ice skating our way through last Thursday morning.

Variety – the Children’s Charity NSW – a national not-for-profit organisation that helps sick, disadvantaged and special needs children – hosted an ice skating event for the children they support to have a fun day out. Their mission is to help kids be kids by giving the children they support opportunities to live, laugh and learn. As Variety’s Corporate Partnerships Executive Catherine Worrall summed up on the day, the ice skating event represents “the laugh component” of their mission.

JobAdder happily volunteered a few Adders to assist with pushing the kids around the ice rink on plastic chairs and without a doubt, we had just as much fun as the kids did!

Kind of an awesome volunteering opportunity, right?

As a fairly inexperienced skater (who hated rollerblading as a child) I’ll admit that I was a little worried about how I’d go out there on the ice. Luckily for me, the chairs glided smoothly over the ice and were also a good stabiliser, so it didn’t matter that I moved slower than a snail on crutches without one!

First and foremost, we’re grateful to have had the chance to give joy to some little rays of sunshine that deserve it most. As well as feeling appreciative of all the opportunities we have, it made us reflect upon what a perfect position we, and other companies like us, are in to give back.

As a tech company that builds software to improve the lives of our customers, what better way to improve the lives of those who need it most than by taking part in charity events like this one?

The great thing about supporting charities like Variety is that there are so many ways to give back, be it by volunteering, by making monetary donations or by donating food, clothing or even spare office hardware as JobAdder has done in the past.

At JobAdder, we all play a role in cultivating a positive company culture. Participating in charity events like Variety’s one is a great team building exercise and a way we foster our company culture and values.

Blisters and Blades of Glory jokes aside, JobAdder’s skate squad had a ball doing something meaningful and we encourage other companies to do the same!
